Interesting times...the best reason for a Happy Hour~! Is it time for the next Great Depression or perhaps I feel that way because I am over 50.
I was married for 25 years and now I'm divorced. Two girls, ages 25 and 20, and one grandson (soon to be two!). Love politics, economics, music, friends, family, sci fi, reading, philosophy.
Wish I understood the world of high finance better. Getting quite an education on Calculated Risk, but feel like the dunce in the corner of the classroom.

My Friends Tigger and Pooh: Super Sleuth Christmas Movie
How could they? They Pixared Pooh. It looks creepy. Pooh on acid. Distorted and weird looking. Pooh is supposed to be water color soft, not the crisp edgy CGI looking creature they made him. You know how you can watch a movie where they make a city look warm, welcoming, all fuzzy and soft, and they can take that same city and make it look all noir like. Harsh, cold, unfriendly, faintly menacing? That is how it seems to me.
I still love to sing "I'm Just a Little Black Rain Cloud." I love the voice of the narrator, Sebastian Cabot.
That reminds me. We saw Dennis Haysbert, the guy from The Unit and the guy in the Allstate insurance commercials. Now that is a lovely deep voice, and such a handsome man, too. He was a guest on the Bonnie Hunt show we saw this week. We also saw Cynthia McFadden, co-host of Nightline. I had forgotten about Nightline. Remember Ted Koppel. I liked Cynthia McFadden though. The last time we saw Bonnie, Helen Hunt was on and what a bitch. Cold, arrogant, stuck up. She went on and on how she does not allow TV in her home and told a truly obnoxious story about her daughter and Inauguration Day for President Obama and how she thought because it was such a momentous day, she should watch the swearing in, but her daughter said no, that was not allowed in their home. She thought it was a funny story. Gack.
It has definitely been a blustery day in Temecula? I hope Piglet goes flying by soon.
Jay Leno Show with President Barack Obama March 2009
And the gold medal goes to....HAHAHA. Obama was funny on this clip. I am not a Democrat and I am no longer a Republican. I am mad at both of them but this clip is truly fun to watch. Do I for one minute think he is malicious? Heartless? Cruel? Or worse...a Republican~! Egads. Nooooo.....
It is so much fun to hear the wails from the right and left on this one. You can say things like this if you are on the left because, of course, by default you are compassionate, kind, generous, loving, without a mean bone in your body, so if you make a joke about Special Olympians and their lack of ability, you are just joshing. Gosh. Can't you take a joke? If you say something like this and you are on the right, then you are an evil, heartless, pinched, miserly human being, you cannot possibly say something like this in the same spirit as Obama did in this clip. The left needs to stop ascribing evil intents to the right and the right needs to stop saying, neener, neener, you are a hypocrite. The left does not care if they are hypocrites.
I think it was funny. We have jokes about rednecks, Nascar people, trailer trash, white trash, hippies, the nuts and flakes from California, limousine liberals, fly-over country people. South Park makes a fortune making fun of every stereotype there is. Smug Alert is a favorite of mine.
Is this clip funny? I think it is mean but then I dislike Johnny Knoxville intensely so I am probably a pretty poor judge and I did not see the entire movie. Maybe it had some redeeming qualities.
Cruelty is such a different animal than teasing. We went to visit my grandma one day and there was a boy there with this incredibly huge head kind of lying on the couch in the living room. I think he was a cousin. I have so many cousins, I stopped keeping track. The last count I attempted was about 35 first cousins. I was young and could not understand the whole situation. My mom told me he had water on the brain. Say what? Couldn't they just drain it out of his head? As an adult, I assume they meant hydrocephalus. I thought it was kind of icky. Cut me some slack. I was a kid. What I do remember was how gentle and kind everyone was with him and I knew to say something mean would have been not just wrong, I think even then I knew it would have said something about my character. Thinking about it now, I think it would have hurt my heart to hear someone be cruel to him.
Political correctness is such drag. I wish someone would send it down the gutter.
Mizwrite has a post on Heroes that I liked and got me to thinking. I said that I am pretty sick and tired of cynicism being thought of as sophisticated and difficult. I mean how hard is to be negative and mean? And if you write well you are probably a best seller.
But...I love a good snark. I love irony. To me that takes so much more brain cells firing than cynicism. I was reading the Washington Post blog, Achenblog, which I just discovered. What snarky fun it is. He is writing about something as mind numbingly boring as what is REALLY in the budget that the President submits? He said all the fun stuff is in the appendix. He talks about how NASA got an "extra $900 million more dollars than the Bush administration's last budget request, which by my calculation will allow it to fire three more satellites into the ocean every year." He has a story in the Washington Post about the satellite "orbiting earth at the bottom of the Indian Ocean."
Kathleen Parker is another snarky columnist as is Maureen Dowd and Michelle Malkin. Christopher Hitchens is probably snarky, too, but his writing is so, so....well, let us say I can read a sentence he has written and not be sure I am speaking the same language. I have seen him on TV though and he is hysterical, even if you don't agree with him. Anybody who can flip off the Bill Maher audience has got to be snarky.
Maybe that is the hallmark of good snark, humor and a quick wit. Jon Stewart leaps to mind here. I like when they pick on all politicians and all issues, not just cherry pick the ones they are against. Hollywood is liberal, so they make fun of conservatives and do a mighty fine job of it, but there is plenty of humor to be had at the expense of the liberal world. We have a fine new Democratic Attorney General, Eric Holder, who says Americans are cowards when it comes to discussing race, and yet they have a fine Democratic member of the senate, Robert Byrd, who was a member of the KKK. Grand Wizard I understand. Now tell me there isn't a good snark in there somewhere.
A good snark takes what you think you know and pushes it outside the box. Kind of the same thing a good reporter should do, but without the sarcasm.
I don't think too many people know how sentimental I am about things patriotic. I love going to air shows and watching the military jets fly overhead. I cry when I hear "I'm Proud to be an American." Going to Arlington Cemetery was a deeply touching moment in my life. And, even though I did not vote for him, the ceremony to swear in our new President will move me greatly. From what I have read, he is a man who is also very aware of his place in history and the significance of his office.
But once again, the atheists of America are going at it again. I practice no religion nowadays. I have no axe to grind regarding any attack they make against any particular religion. (Although they do seem to have a special animosity against anything Christian.) I grew up Catholic, went to Catholic school from fifth grade until my high school graduation. I have been baptized, had my first Holy Communion, and Confirmation.
These are the same people who are making our schools into the most bland, noxious, politically correct, and intolerant places around. Are you offended by something? Well, by god, you better complain and get that banned from the school. God forbid we offend somebody. Let us not celebrate anything like we used to. We CAN celebrate gay pride day, Earth Day, make a religion about global warming, and lord help you if you disagree with them. You are not just wrong, you don't just disagree or have a different opinion, you are EVIL. You are BAD.
I am glad we have a President who believes in something bigger than himself and that it does seem to inform his life. I am glad he is reaching out to people like Rick Warren. Maybe his attack dog democrats will be leashed for four years. I doubt it, but we can hope. He needs a lot people praying for him right now because from what I have read of his plans for our economy, he seems doomed to play captain of the Titanic.
So help me God, I may have to slap the next atheist I see.
I love this movie. It makes me happy when I watch it and I love the songs in it. My friends have a list called The Sunday Six and it is a way for them to count their blessings and list the things that make them smile and make them happy. I am definitely not disciplined enough to have a Sunday Six but I certainly can do this once in a while.
My list will be slightly different though. Cruddy things happen all the time but as the saying goes, "There has to be a pony here somewhere with all this crap." So, I will TRY to find a pony amongst the steaming piles.
My daughter's car was vandalized last night. She has only had the car for about a month, a darling red Ford Focus. Well, someone SPRAY PAINTED on it. They wrote "Fuck Obama" and "Die Obama" on the side of her car and on the rear window. Called the police, who were not going to come out until I told them a reporter was coming out because the same vandals had spray painted on the sidewalk up the street. (They had sprayed a swastika and "Fuck Obama.") Someone is not too happy with Obama, but the irony is my daughter and I did not vote for Obama. This was her first time to vote, and it was for president of the United States. I thought that was pretty cool, but she did not like either candidate so she voted libertarian. She did put a No on 8 poster out in front of our house which I guess pissed off some people. I told her that Californians have never voted for something like this and she was spinning her wheels.
So where is the pony? (Kind of like Where's Waldo, huh). Well, the paint came off with a good waxing, so her car looks better than before. HAHAHA. Not much of a pony, maybe a My Little Pony, but I was happy about that. I hope my daughter never stops speaking out for what she believes in but sometimes there are consequences.
I have a lot more like this but it is getting late and I need to go to bed.
Congratulations to President Obama, our new 44th president. I saw part of his acceptance speech this morning when I woke up and I have to admit I liked it. But those are words and politicians use words the way the Ginsu knife cuts through an aluminum can--it seems so easy but you are not sure it is real.
I get a newsletter alert sent to my e-mail when the New York Times has a breaking story or an alert. This is what I got today: "Russia Warns of Missile Deployment." He is not even in office, and Dimitri Medvedev is already challenging him. He is inheriting a world that I hope he is ready for and has the wisdom to handle.
