The Balls in the Iron Mask

Teddy Bear: Do you know it's a myth that if testicles get too hot they produce less sperm. No need to wear boxers instead of tighty whiteys.

Me: Really? How did they test that hypothesis?

Teddy Bear: Well, they put the balls in metal for like 48 hours and then they tested sperm count before and after.

Me: *mouth hanging open* They put some guys' balls in an iron mask? Good lord.

Killdozer: I want to know how to get that kind of job.

That is the kind of conversation I have in my house when you watch "The Big Bang Theory."

The thing to ask, though, was not so much the sperm count itself. Were the sperm viable? Did they have multiple heads? Multiple flagella? Did they undergo meiosis properly? Were any of them "blanks"? Did they perform their jobs properly when inserted into a vagina/uterus (not all sperm are there just to fertilize the egg...some are there to keep competitor's sperm out)?

Obviously, sperm are viable for a while in a warm environment (otherwise, the vagina and uterus would be outside the woman's body). Do the testes/testicles perform their duty correctly and make healthy, viable sperm. That's the real question.

Ummm...yeah. Well. I think the study was just about spooging more. Sperm morphology is a whole blog post on its own. Two-headed sperm? Twisted and odd shaped? Multiple tails. And I would think all sperm are competitive little buggers. Are you saying they take one for the team? Those must be the sperm firing blanks. For some reason now, I am channeling Woody Allen.

I have heard such awesome things about this show and I have never watched it. This post made me want to run home and DVR it- especially if it can bring about the hilarity that was your conversation with Teddy.

Yeah, apparently, there are "killer sperm" that go around trying to block other sperm that they find that don't match the same genetic code or something. I'm guessing they look for different proteins on the outside of the cell, I don't know. But, there are some that just plain don't head for the egg.

And then there's the Homer sperm that just bang into each other and yell "d'oh!"
